We attended the Mission 1st ward today and truly felt the spirit of each message of our Savior's Atonement. My attention was drawn to the member sighning for the deaf. He put such feeling into his hands and facial expressions and had to keep wiping the tears from his own eyes as he shared the message being given. Sister Medrano was interpreting for the Hispanic members that didn't understand English. It came to me strongly that in every language we can express the tender feelings of our hearts. How grateful I am for the promises this day (Easter) holds for me; for all of us.
As we returned from church, we noticed the parking lot empty of a large grocery store and Elder Avery commented that it must be closed for Easter as the predominate religion is Catholic. It will be interesting to see if they do the same on Christmas.
On Thursday we went with Elder and Sis. Davidson (office missionaries) to the home of people they are friendshipping. Many friends and neighbors were there and the Elders that are in that area were there also. There were intrepreters for us and the family members of the Davidsons' that were visiting from Oregon. It was a delightful evening of plenty to eat, and enjoying each others company and to see that the language really doesn't have to be a barrier. The home we were actually at was Brother Garcia and there was an emotional testimony shared by him of a trial his family has gone through. His son had a piece of metal enter through his eye and lodge next to his skull. This happened when he was using a weed-eater during a service project. The son and his wife have been in San Antonio since December while the boy recuperates. He had the metal safely removed but also had to have his eye removed. He was fitted with an artificial eye. (I remembered my grandfather having an artificial eye that he used to tease us by taking it out. He lost his eye when it was penetrated by a mesquite thorn.) These people live in very humble circumstances and it was a humbling experience for us to be there. Elder Avery recognized some of them in the foyer at the church today and they felt comfortable asking him in their broken english where they were suppose to go because Elder Davidson hadn't found them yet. Anyway, we are having a great experience.
Elder Avery had to have a tooth removed that apparently didn't respond to the dental work we had done before our mission. He is healing well but will needs to have further attention to replace the tooth. My telling this has to do with finding out about a great bread store. It was in the dentist office that I received this information and I was excited because I have sorely been missing home-made bread. You would have thought I was a kid in a candy store when I saw all the wonderful home-made everything! Needless to say, I am a happy missionary.
There are gorgeous flowers blooming everywhere and the corn in the fields as about 8-10 inches tall. It is kind of hard to tell from the road as we pass by but we look forward to it already.
Employment work is going slow but we keep pressing forward. This area has the most unemployment in the whole state and we are not exactly sure why. There are a lot of undocumented here and we know that is a contributing factor as well as having a high school diploma or GED. We just know that the Lord has a here for a reason and we will continue to pray for solutions.
Love,
Los Averys

I love reading about your experiences. Our daughter, Angela, had a cute baby boy(her second), on March 17th, Ephriam Porter Young. I spent some time there to help out. Happy Easter! Melanie Elkins
Always enjoy your narratives; you paint a beautiful picture of life in southern Texas.
Hello well our husbands must of been chewing on the same rock Evan had to have a tooth pulled last week also, the tooth clear down to his roots was cracked in half. We can just call them toothless.
So glad you found yummy bread, there is just not many choices to replace homemade. Texas sounds beautiful and the wonderful experiences you are having sound even better, you two are awesome. I'm so grateful for your example and testimonies. I love reading your updates it makes it easier for you to be so far away. Yes I will say I miss you. Kennedy turns 8 today and will be baptised on May 2nd. Addison is walking all over the place she will be 1 on April 30th. She is such a delight and brings us so much joy! The gospel is true God lives Jesus is the Christ and the atonement is a wonderful gift it has more meaning in my life now then ever before I think that comes with age. I love you both and your always in our prayers.
