First day on the job!

We arrived in McAllen Texas Saturday and after a quick look at where our office is, we spent the rest of the day getting setteled in. We are pleased with our apartment and this area is really quite beautiful, and calling it home for a year is okay.

On Sunday we attended Mission 1st Ward which is one of many we will visit on a rotating basis. This ward is English speaking but they always have an interpreter on a headset and those who only speak spanish with earphones listening while this interpreter translates everything. There was also one deaf women who had one member doing sign language for her. We had to get use to hearing someone quietly talking during all the meetings and just tune it out and concentrate on the speaker or teacher. It really was a great experience. When we attend the Spanish speaking wards, we may not have this luxury so hopefully we will gradually pick up some spanish.

We have been concerned that our not knowing the language will hinder us but we already have members that have volunteered to come at a certain time on a certain day to help with the translating when we are helping people become self-reliant. They are loving people and it is going to be a great experience.

Today (Monday) we spent with the couple we are replaciing and started learning how they run the office. Even though we have had 3 weeks of training, every office is somewhat different and we need to know in detail our responsibilities. What a lot to learn!!!!!! With the Lord on our side we will make it. It sure is a humbling experience.

Time to get supper and rest so we can be energized for another day. I am sure I will have a lot to share when I blog next as this week is full of evening responsibilities which includes a big zone conference.

Hi sweet mom and dad-in-law. We are so glad to hear that you made it and are getting settled. It sounds like you are going to be so busy. Ashy has been telling me that grandma needs to come and take him to the park (and get ice cream?) I told him that you are doing work for heavenly father right now but, when you come home in a year we will schedule a date. We miss and love you but, we know that you are in the right place right now. Love you.
